Susi Lawson - Workshop Information

This workshop is now over, but planning to have more in the future! If you have a camera club or group that is interested in my coming to your town to teach you my techniques, please shoot me an email and we can discuss making this happen!
My first workshop was a lot of fun and a success ! I intentionally did not market my first one except here and on Facebook to keep the group small and personal. I had people come from up and down the East Coast . I knew everyones name from either Facebook or from previous DVD customers and it was such a delight to meet them and I am very honored that they attended. Portrait Impact! Workshop, Marion Virginia, July 2011 – Photography has long been a skill set used for technical documentation as part of my job as an engineer. I’ve always had an interest in advancing my photo enhancing skills for personal use but lacked any background to utilize even the most basic of artistic tools integral in today’s digital tools. With the many elements to be mastered there simply is no way for the “Photoshop Cheat” book paradigm to be of any value for my objectives.

As an admirer of Susi’s photo-art style and her excellent ability to communicate the important basics in layman terms I immediately jumped on an opportunity to attend her first live workshop “Portrait Impact!” - I was not disappointed. The half-day session was a good balance of both theory and hands on needed to get my personal training kick-started. The well scripted and produced training DVD included with the workshop is broken down into modules that are easy to follow and accomplish in progressive steps. I found that my MacBook Air and Adobe Photoshop 5 were more than adequate for the session. The only thing I would have done different is to bring a digitizing tablet.

Susi’s gift of artistic style and passion for teaching are a rare combination and make t learning the skills I need fun, well done Susi !!

"Hi Susi: Just a quick note to thank you sharing your PhotoShop techniques in your recent Workshop. The biggest thing I walked away with was finally being able to paint realistic hair. I also gained additional insight to painting skin without overdoing it. Also it was new to me that you could retain shadows and highlights using the color replacement tool. "Having the workshop scheduled at 1:00pm to 6pm on Saturday was a perfect time. It allowed my party the travel-time to drive and arrive with plenty of time to explore the city and surrounding national parks, hiking trails and camping sites for future adventures. The length of the workshop was also comfortable in allowing the instructor to get her ideas across to all the students.
Equipment: Every student brought their own laptop, with needed software installed; most had their Wacom tablets to help with the workshop experiences.
Learning Experience: The workshop was set up to teach us the photographic equipment used by the instructor, how each worked, with tips and tricks of photography. Then we moved on to Photoshop; learned tips on layers, adjustments on the photos, deleting backgrounds… all those little things that bring out the creativeness in photo painting with Photoshop. All lessons learned in the class were also provided on a DVD to each of us, along with a book of the instructor’s photo creations.
At the breaks, fellow students shared their experiences with Photoshop, the advantages of membership with NAPP, experiences with photography in our native areas; the camaraderie with my fellow students was fun and exciting. I enjoyed being with everyone there.
I look forward to other workshops. The information that I learned will help me take better photographs, as well as learning new methods in Photoshop to make more creative digital paintings.
